Growing up a ChangeMaker

Never have truer words been spoken. Time goes by so quickly. Fortunately, I have a few sage and seasoned souls in my world who have long warned, “the older you get, the quicker time passes – slow it down.” So, I tried to slow the hands of time a couple of times, but all of a sudden it’s been 20 years since starting this voyage called ChangeMakers.
Time flies. I was 27 years old. Idealistic and stubborn. I lacked patience and made mistakes.
We worked hard to build a brand and everything that means to clients, competitors and our internal team. Our brand is a promise. A commitment. It’s a pledge to be a responsible firm, a change agent for our clients and a great place to work as well.
We created a safe environment where you can be yourself. A place where you can take risks inside the sanctum in front of your team that will lead to better creative when the public-facing message hits the street. A place to flex insight into strong strategy. A place where team matters and each member guards it fiercely.
ChangeMakers is very comfortable in our skin and our space….but it wasn’t always like that. I remember trying to look like a bigger company than we actually were to appeal to a specific potential client. I recall not getting an account because someone thought we might be too big (or expensive) for their budgets. All lessons on self, learned in the past two decades.
Our points of difference found us (as opposed to us discovering them) and we held them tight.
Honest. Reasonable. Wildly creative. Dependable. Committed.
We were very intentional at building a brand based on results, fair play and a commitment to creative rooted in tangible results, as opposed to industry awards, accolades and our next client.
This year marks our 20th year in business. Now staring down the barrel of my late forties, I see the errors, the wisdom, the good fortune and the path that led us here.
What would I do differently if I had the chance to go back to 1998 and start again? Probably nothing.
No regrets. No grand laments. Just gratitude, appreciation, loyalty and friendship.
I am also very keenly aware that we’re just getting started!
